A collaboration borne of longstanding childhood friendship, DUO SHU is comprised of cellist Yi-wen Zhang and pianist Nanyi Qiang, originally from Chengdu in the Sichuan province of southwestern China, now based in the US (New Jersey and Ohio respectively). DUO SHU’s exquisite recording features works by Fauré, Schumann, Rachmaninoff, Dvořák, Gao and Bartók serving to calm and soothe the mind, reflect on yearning for homecoming, and charm the spirit. Featured on the recording are: Gabriel Fauré’s Les Berceaux, Op. 23, No. 1 (The Cradles) and Après un rêve, Op. 7, No. 1 (After a dream); Robert Schumann’s Fünf Stücke im Volkston Op. 102 (Five Pieces in Folk Style); Sergei Rachmaninoff’s Vocalise Op. 34, No. 14; Antonín Dvořák’s Four Romantic Pieces, Op. 75, B. 150 (arr. by Yi-wen Zhang); Weijie Gao’s Longing for SHU, here in its commercial recording debut; Béla Bartók’s playful and delightful Romanian Folk Dances (arr. by Luigi Silva).
